Site-Based Approach to Web Cache Design

چکیده
W eb caching is widely viewed as an effective way to improve Internet performance. Web cache servers temporarily store Web documents. Because cache servers are typically located near the clients, using them reduces retrieval latencies and the number of requests reaching Web servers, thus reducing overall network activity. Most Web cache servers make cache decisions based on document names or URLs. Although it seems natural to keep statistics on individual documents, it is not the only option. We propose a new basis for caching decisions: a site-based approach. With this approach, cache servers consider the Web site a document belongs to, rather than the document itself. Depending on the application, a site-based approach can offer many benefits, including proxy load reduction, higher prediction and hit ratios, and fewer memory requirements. When we first proposed this idea in 1999,1 we were unaware of any previous related work. However, we have since found that some researchers implicitly applied a site-based approach, though they did not focus on it. Here, we describe the site-based approach and consolidate previous efforts, discussing both the approach’s benefits and its successful applications.

Alternative web caching design: a site-based approach
The existing designs and solutions for web caching systems commonly make caching decisions based on document or uniform resource locator (URL) information. While this conventional approach works, the authors deliver insights into the alternative approach using site information for web caching design. This site-based approach makes caching decisions based on the website that an object belongs to...
متن کاملLifetime Behavior and its Impact on Web Caching
The exponential growth of the World Wide Web has made it the most popular information dissemination tool in the world. The growth necessitates caching, prefetching, and replication schemes on the web to alleviate the web server load, conserve the network band-width, and reduce the retrieval latency. At the same time, cache consistency should be maintained to avoid returning stale pages to users...
متن کاملAn Adaptive Web Cache Access Predictor Using Neural Network
This paper presents a novel approach to successfully predict Web pages that are most likely to be re-accessed in a given period of time. We present the design of an intelligent predictor that can be implemented on a Web server to guide caching strategies. Our approach is adaptive and learns the changing access patterns of pages in a Web site. The core of our predictor is a neural network that u...
متن کاملA Novel Approach for Predicting User Behavior for Improving Web Performance
The rapid growth in the amount of information and the number of users has lead to difficulty in providing effective search services for the web users and increased web latency; resulting in decreased web performance. Although web performance can be improved by caching, the benefit of using it is rather limited owing to filling the cache with documents without any prior knowledge. Web prefetchin...
متن کاملExploiting Object Relationships for Deterministic Web Object Management∗
This paper presents a novel Web object management mechanism called MONARCH. The primary goal of our mechanism is to provide strong cache consistency without requiring servers to maintain per-client state. MONARCH also seeks to reduce overhead incurred by heuristic-based cache consistency mechanisms. Servers first classify objects at a site based on object change characteristics. Then the server...
